KAON facilitates MCI to set up STB plant in Nigeria

South Korean digital broadcasting services provider, KAON Media and Nigerian set-top-box manufacturer, Media Concepts International Limited (MCI), have come together to establish a STB manufacturing plant in Nigeria with an estimated cost of over USD1 billion. The project has been approved by the broadcasting authority, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The plant is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2016. Post completion of the plant, it would have a capacity to manufacture over three million set-top-boxes.

“The agreement reached by KAON Media and MCI will play critical roles in ensuring that Nigeria meets the new June 2017 digital migration deadline having missed the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) switchover deadline of June this year,” opined Emeka Mba, Director General of the NBC.

“The plant will also create more than one thousand jobs for Nigerians,” said Babatope Agbeyo, Chairman of Media Concepts International Limited.

“The site for the factory is ready and by January next year, the foundation laying ceremony will be laid while by the end of the year, the factory will hopefully go on stream. The DSO is a massive project that will change a lot of things,” said Young Kang, Director, Sales at KAON Media.
